It's that time of year again! Get ready because we have all kinds of fun events planned throughout Colchester for this years Bike Week. This years events run from May 26th - June 3 and range in fitness level and age level. All events are free unless noted. Prizes will be given away at all events! Helmets are required on all rides. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please remember to bring sunscreen and water.  

About the Weather: Rides will be cancelled if it is raining. If it is overcast, misty or cloudy, rides will go as scheduled. All other events will take place rain or shine.

Season Kick Off!

United Way's Bikes for Kids
End of May to Mid-July
The Bikes for Kids Program collects donated, gently-used bikes from members in the community. The bikes are repaired, safety checked and polished by United Way staff and volunteers. The newly renovated bikes are distributed to children (ages 2-18) in the community who need a bike.

Victoria Secret Mountain Bike Race
Sunday, May 20
8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (registration)
11:00am start
The First Race in the 2012 Atlantic & BNS MTB_XC Point series. The race will feature top riders from all over Atlantic Canada.  Located at beautiful Victoria Park.

Bike Week events are as follows:

Bike Swap
When:
Saturday, May 26    9am 12pm
Where: Douglad Street Recreation Centre
If you have bikes and equipment that you don't need anymore, here is your chance to get rid of it. Buy a table for $5, (money goes to United Way). And sell all your unwanted bike stuff. Call the town of Truro at 893-6078 to book a table.

Kids Fun Race in Victoria Park
When:
Sunday, May 27   10am
Where: Victoria Park (meet by the picnic shelter)
Put on by Hub Cycle, this race will take place in Victoria Park. A nice challenging race through the trails in our great park.

Off to the Market
When:
Monday, May 28   6pm
Where: Meet at Central Colchester Junior High School, 61 Onslow Road, Onslow.
A 32 km return trip, road ride to Masstown Market. Relaxed pace and suitable for intermediate riders. Ice cream treats at the market! Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Crusher Dusters Ride
When:
Tuesday, May 29   6:30pm
Where: Truro Junior High School
Tired of driving with cars and on rocks and routes? Come join Daisy Roberts from Hub Cycle on the recreational tour of the crusher dust paths in Victoria Park. This is a recreational ride. Everyone is welcome.  

Short Track Race
When:
Tuesday, May 29   6:30 pm - 8pm
Where: Victoria Park (near the water treatment plant on Young Street)
Fun, fit and for the whole family. Try your hand at a short track race. These events are for elementary, junior high, senior high and adults.

Bike to Molly's Dairy Bar
When:
Wednesday, May 30   6:30 om
Where: Meet at Bible Hill Village Hall
A relaxed 12 km round trip for beginners. Ice cream for all participants when they get there.

Stewiacke Bike Rodeo
When:
Wednesday, May 30   2:15 - 4pm
Where: Winding River Consolidated
Stewiacke's own Bike Rodeo! Organized by the Stewiacke Parks and Recreation and Colchester Bike Week Committee.

Afterschool BMX Jam
When:
Thursday, May 31   3:30pm - 6pm
Where: Truro Skate Park
Come one, come all...to watch and participate in the BMX Jam. Free to ride. No judges. Home town hero Drew Bezanson will be in attendance.

Bike Movie
When:
Thursday, May 31   7pm
Where: Marigold Centre
Pedal your bike to the Marigold Centre for a new feature. Watch the movie "Strength in Numbers".

Bike Trails
When:
Friday, June 1   6:30 pm
Where: Victoria Park (meet by the picnic shelter)
Come to Victoria Park and take part in Bike Trails. Bike Trails is basically an obstacle course for bikes. If you are a good techinical rider and can ride challenging terrain, this event is for you. Great for spectators.

Morning Club Ride
When:
Saturday, June 2   9am
Where: Victoria Park (meet at the Truro Junior High , Young St. Truro)
Hub Cycle Spokebenders Cycling Club will lead a beginner level mountain bike ride in the upper part of Victoria Park. Minimum 24" wheel size bikes to participate, due to the style of the trails.

Bike Revolution
When: Sunday, June 3   12pm
Where: Victoria Sqaure, Truro
Come one, come all...on your bicycle! Join cyclists from across the Colchester County for a ride "en masse" through the streets of downtown Truro, from Victoria Square to the streets of downtown Truro, from Victoria Sqaure to the Legion Stadium. Bring your family and friends. Free Colchester Bike Week t-shirt to the first 60 participants! Assemble on Commercial St. (beside Victoria Sqaure) at 11:45am for the 12 pm start. The route will be closed to motor vehicle traffic during this event.

Kids Bike Safety Rodeo
When:
Sunday, June 3   1pm - 3pm  
Where: Colchester Legion Stadium, Truro
KIDS! A fun event for children in grades p-6 to learn about cycling skills and safety, bike safety inspection and proper helmet fit. There will be a series of stations to "test" cycling skills and knowledge of cycling safety. Draws for helmets, bikes and other fun bike stuff will happen during the event, (you must be a bike rodeo participant and in attendance to win). Partnership with the RCMP, Town of Truro Police, and the Bike Week Committee.  

 Family Bike Ride
Any time, any where
!
Celebrate biking in Truro and Colchester County with your friends and family! Bike on the Cobequid Trail from old Barns to Bible Hill! Go out and enjoy riding!

Kids Art Contest
Kids! Ask your teacher about entering the Colchester Bike Week Coloring and Art Contest. You could win a new bicycle and a bike rack for your school! Contact Colchester Recreation for more details.

Bike Week Photo Contest!
Show off your photography skills! Submit your favorite bike related photo, taken during bike week, for a chance to win a great prize! You MUST own the rights to any photo submitted. Tell us about your photo! Who’s In it? Where you took it, and when you took it, the more information the better! All photos will be uploaded to  Colchester.ca/recreation-services site for viewing.

Bike Week Challenge
Colchester Bike Week wants to bring cycling to more schools and workplaces in Colchester County by encouraging people to join. June is Active Transportation Month and June is Recreation Month in Nova Scotia.  Send us an email or call and let us know  how active you were during Bike Week (May 26 -June 3). Your name will go into a draw for some Bike Week prizes. Save gas money, get lots of exercise and reduce greenhouse gas emissions all at the same time!

Would you like to improve your cycling skills, learn more about bicycle care and operation, and gain confidence to ride more often? CAN-BIKE offers courses for all ages and skill levels. Contact Colchester Recreation about taking a CAN-BIKE course.
