Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre Project

altThe Municipality of Colchester and the Town of Truro Councils have long believed that the building of the new Civic Centre will provide countless economic and social opportunities for residents of this region and beyond.

Combined, the two Councils have contributed $24 million towards the construction of the facility, demonstrating their commitment to providing the residents of Central Nova Scotia with a first class, accessible facility for all to enjoy.

When opened, the facility will be owned by the Town of Truro and Municipality of Colchester and operated by a "not for profit" board of directors comprised of council representatives and community volunteers.

What Will the Facility Contain?

In 2009, the User Group Space Programming Committee held several consultation sessions with specialty groups and citizens in the community to determine what components should be included in the facility to maximize programming options that would appeal to a diverse range of recreational interests.  The findings from these sessions, coupled with the need to build within a budget, resulted in the following components to be included in the new civic centre:

  • 2600 seat event arena
  • NHL size ice pad/7 change rooms
  • 3 lane walking/jogging track
  • aquatic centre - therapeutic leisure pool and 8 lane competitive pool
  • fitness centre
  • multipurpose and meeting space
  • rock climbing wall
  • canteen/food service
  • display space
  • administrative and program space
  • Colchester East Hants Health Authority space

LEED® Certification

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED®) is an internationally recognized "green" building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building is designed and built to improve performance in areas such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.  LEED® is based on a number of credits or measures where targets are identified and set for the main environmental issues.  The Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre is expected to meet the LEED® SILVER Designation. If requirements are met, the Centre will be the first municipally owned LEED® building in Central Nova Scotia.

Ignite the Spirit Campaign

A $5 million Ignite the Spirit Campaign was launched to secure the final portion of the funding needed for the new Centre.  Our "Name that Seat" Campaign has created much "buzz" in the community as it is a way to leave your mark on the new Centre, recognize a family member or a friend, or in memory of a loved one.  For information on our "Name that Seat" Campaign or other ways to donate, please visit the Ignite the Spirit website at www.ignitethespirit.ca or by phoning the campaign office at 893-9706.
